COMPLIMENTARY COLORS
The intent of this photo series is to understand the makeup of our own color/race, exploring our interactions with those who are different from us, and having empathy for those who are different from us.
Typically when complementary colors (R+G, B+O, Y+P) are combined, they create a shade of brown. From middle school art class, I learned that for different ethnicities, their skin tone (their shade of brown) is due to different complementary color pairings. For example, Caucasians are red and green, thus their common pink undertone. Asians are yellow and purple. African Americans, Indians, and Mexicans are orange and blue, thus their warmer complexion.
The photos are broken into three stages:
-
Segregation (photos 1-4): At first, each of the 3 complementary color pairings stick with those who are the same, divided from those who are different color pairings.
-
Interaction (photos 5-6): As the models begin to interact with those who are different color pairings, there is tension, both good and bad.
-
Empathy (photos 7-9): All the models come together to realize that while their differences make them unique, they all should empathize for each other, and understand that there is more to gain when you love instead of hate.
